Hmmm...
To do:
  • Extract any demos that are in
    • USA demo disc
      • 17 to 23
    • Europe demo disc
      • 14 (November 2004)
  • and check if they are pre-final
  • There is a very similar Japanese demo in "Interactive Multi-Game Demo Disc - July 2004 (Japan)".
    • It doesn't have a build date in its internal name and none of the file or SDK dates are different, but it seems like this Japanese demo may have been built first, as it has a dbg (debug) folder containing many symbol maps.
    • The dbg folder doesn't exist in the USA demo or USA final, but it does exist as an empty folder in the Japanese version and the European version.
    • The code, text, title screen graphics and non-visual data in the font differ from the USA demo as well.

The letters in the font used for the start of chapter screen are thicker in the final. The numbers are unchanged. The word "STAGE" may have been for demo purposes, rather than an early name for chapters.

The "UP" in the "LEVEL UP!" font and its corresponding "blurred" version is shifted a bit in the final.

The letters spell "STYLE!" in the demo, but "STYLISH!" in the final.

The demo uses the early font that is left unused in the final Japanese game.

Directory Name Differences

Some directory names in the game's fileysystem are shorter in the final.

  • "bg" -> "b"
  • "eff -> "e"
  • "font" -> "f"
    • the font file is called "popjoyB22.bfn" - named after the font it is based on. The final game uses "papermarioset_[region].bfn".
  • "map" -> "m"
    • "camera_road.bin" -> "c"
    • "map.dat" -> "d"
    • "texture.tpl" -> "t"
  • "emsg" -> "msg"
  • "window" -> "w"
  • the subfolders of the "setup" folder were merged are the "map"/"m" folder in the final game
    • setup.xml -> s
